That is the most important question that anyone can ever ask. Despite our desire to do things right, our best efforts fall short of perfection. Most people recognize that they are not perfect. We deal with these shortcomings by categorizing our wrongdoings as big or little. We decide which ones are large or small by comparing ourselves the the behavior of other people. The problem is that God compares us not to each other, as we tend to do, but to His perfection. This inability to meet God's standard of perfection is what the Bible calls sin. The Bible reflects this truth in Romans 3:23 where it states, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Sin creates a rupture in our relationship with God. Because of His sense of justice, He cannot ignore wrongdoing - there must be a consequence. Romans 6:23 states, "The wages of sin is death". Because we have sinned, our wages, or what we have earned, is death or eternal separation from God.
However, Romans 5:8 states, "God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Salvation, which provides eternal life with God and a fantastic life now, cannot come about by our activity, work, or obedience. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone. Jesus Christ is God's only Son. He alone was sinless and He alone could die on the Cross for our sins. Believe in Him as your Savior and you will be saved eternally. You will become a Christian.
Eternal life is available to you, right now. In the privacy and freedom of your soul, you can tell God that you are believing in Jesus Christ, and that is the moment of eternal life.
"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name" - John 1:12
"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9
